The original IRIX 6.2 did not install on the R5000. There were
updates to IRIX 6.2 that should work.

Hi Walter,

Are you sure that you aren't thinking of IRIX 5.3? IRIX 5.3 had a
bunch of different versions, two of which were specific to the R5K
Indy (IRIX 5.3 for Indy including R5000, and IRIX 5.3 XFS for Indy
including R5000).

IIRC, the original IRIX 6.2 (March 1996) supported the Indy R5k out of
the box, so maximuslivius would seem to have a different issue.

Aside from Trusted IRIX, the only other edition of 6.2 was the June
version made for "Indigo 2 Impact R10000." (Note: the Impact R10k
edition did install correctly on Indys, too, but SGI didn't support
that approach.)

Best regards,
JH

BTW, this system would work just fine with IRIX 6.5.

Are you using an official SGI Installation Tools disk, or is it one
that was burned from the downloadable tar files at SGI? If the latter,
it won't have the necessary boot files.

For more info, see

Also take a look at http://www.futuretech.blinkenlights.nl/6.5inst.html
, which seems to be considered the definitive guide to installing 6.5
by the hobbyist community. (There is also a 6.2 installation guide at
the same site.)

Probably stupid questions but are you sure the hard disk and its
partitions are OK? SCSI bus termination OK?

It turns out to be the first CD the culprit. Wrong burning, Overlays 1
of 3 CD
is the same as the 3 of 3 CD.

As per the SCSI bus, it is terminated indeed.

I will give it a retry as soon as I get the correct 6.5.22 1 of 3 CD.

thanks
