Creating actual bootable CDs from the SGI Irix 6.5.22 distrib on ftp
(too old to reply)

Hi,
I got this O2 station from work, they removed the original HDD, so I
bought a new 36G SCSI ultra160 80-pin SCA-2 hdd for it, but now i need
to install IRIX from scratch. I downloaded the IRIX 6.5.22 CDs from
SGIs ftp, but they are not ISO images, just file structures? How do I
burn a bootable CD from them (I guess at least the first one should be
bootable?).

I tried burning a bootable CD from Nero, but Neros ships only with a
DOS boot image, and I am doubting if that will do the job? Any help?

thanks!

You can't. You need the base 6.5 CDs as well as the 6.5.22 --
what you are looking at is just the "overlays" (changes since 6.5
original)

Are those available on their FTP site as well? Or is there any other
place to get them?

thanks!

Unless SGI policy has changed (unlikely), the base IRIX 6.5 CDs
are *not* available to download. Also, since December 29 2006,
SGI stopped selling them.

You can buy decorative IRIX 6.5 coasters from various ebay vendors,
but you cannot use the data on them unless you are in Germany
or Denmark (or possibly a few other countries), or unless you
made special contractual arrangements with SGI.

As far as I -know-, the only way now to get IRIX 6.5 and use it
legally, is to either buy a "remanufactured" system from SGI, or
else buy a complete system (hardware and software) from an
official registered SGI system owner and go through some minor paperwork
to transfer the licenses to you.

The problem with nearly all the ebay vendors is that they didn't
go through the minor paperwork when they bought their systems from
whomever, so few of them have the proper ownership to transfer.

What you have downloaded is only usefull for an *upgrade* of a *already
up and running* IRIX OS.

1. Theses *.tgz files doesnt come with some files which are needed for
the boot process.
2. Only a few ppl and google knows how to create a bootable EFS cd
3. You need also the IRIX 6.5 (foundation 1+2, sometimes some more) for
a installation

Ask the previous owner of the System. It might be happend that our
System only have a license for < 6.5 ( i always forgot if 6.2 or 6.3 was
for O2)

I would have been happy just to make a set of CD's that would be
recognized by install. I made several attempts without success at all. I
ended up putting the files on the SGI harddisk in a directory, that
works. To make that process bearable with several machines I used a pc
with an FTP server to copy the file to the SGI machines.
