Hi i have a Octane i recently replaced the processor with a dual processor
upon replacing the system board the system will not power up to a serial
prompt and will not power off using power button only via pulling the power
cable, i have tried replacing processor and try reseating the system board.

any idea to why the sysetm will not poweroff with the power button and why
even when i replace the original processor the system does not function?

thanks Graeme

And i forgot to say if you plug the power cable back in ,the power goes on
imediately without the use of the powerswitch.

Sound rather to be a problem with the front cover. Probably you use more
than one disk and did not remove the cover of the HD bay.

Hi

Nope the HDD was removed at the time, just the front board, system board
(processor, memory), graphics board and power pack,

Is there any way to force the system off and stop it automatically powering
up?

thanks

I had a similar problem some time ago. When ever plugin the powercord
the machine starts up automaticly.

I cant remember to the correct order, but it was something like that.

1. Disconnect the cord
2. Hold the power on and plug in the cord and hold the button
3. Wait after the machine boots up,
4. Now disengage the button and press it again to see if it starts shut
down.

The normal case would be the when press the power off button during the
machine is running the LED starts blinking.

From a running irix the system command for a shutdown with power off is:
shutdown -y -g0 -p

Joerg

Make sure the power button isn't locked down. Some idiot put locking
tabs on the Octane's power button, which makes the button stay in and cause
problems. I shaved mine off so this wouldn't be a problem any more. Why
would someone make the power button lock down in the first place?
