Dear all,

On an Indigo2 of mine, i tried to make a serial connection with a
console-cable.
The cable connection seems alright, because when i turn it on, it comes up
niceley with the prom menu:
########## screen shot ##########
System Maintenance Menu

1) Start System

2) Install System Software

3) Run Diagnostics

4) Recover System

5) Enter Command Monitor

Option? 5

?
hinv

########## end of screen shot ##########

for some reason the prom monitor stops responding after choosing option 5.
I tried several options, like putting flow control to hardware, and other
things.
The only thing that look hopefull, is the standard setting with
hyperterminal:

9600 baud
8-n-1 and no flow control...
But it seems to be hanging when i choose one of the menu options...
Please advise....

Kind regards,

What if you try selecting one of the other options?

What if you just press return, or put in nonsense?

In other words, narrow it down to whether it is hanging on -all-
inputs, or if it is specific to option 5. And just for fun,
try using linefeed instead of carriage return to see whether perhaps
it is not doing carriage-return to linefeed translation.

Well, it responds the same way as any other option.
No matter what i put in there.
I have no idea how to change the settings on cr or lf on hyperterm, i'm
still trying to figure that out...
:)

the cursor skips to the beginning of the next line, and that's it...
I don't know if it actually hangs, the cursor still blinks, but that could
also be a hyperterm thing i guess...
It works perfectly well on my O2, where i can choose one of the options,
like 5, and it brings up the prom monitor as it should...
beneath another screen shot, responding to the menu with "blabla".
It doesn't even come up with an error...
:(

4) Recover System

what about option 1 - does it boot into IRIX (assumed there is one)?
You could probably reset the PROM monitor environment from up there.

I´d very much suspect the "console" you made up using hyperterm.
Why not connect that Indigo2 with your O2 on a little ethernet,
and remotely access it from there? IRIX´ admin GUI is pretty good!

Hi Walther,

No, unfortunally, none of the options seem to be responding.
I have a screen, but the "sync on green" option must be disabled in the prom
menu, i know how to do that.
When i connect the mouse and keyboard, the system boots in to irix, no
problem there.
But option 1 is not doing anything, and i need to get into the menu..

:(
