Does anyone happen to know where I could find or even borrow a 6.5 install
CD set? I've got 6.5.15 a.13 upgrade sets, but need to get a base system on
my O2.

Thanks

eBay, is where I got mine. You need 'Foundation 1' and 'Foundation 2'
and if you compile you need 'Development Foundation' and 'Development
Libraries' and I found that 'ONC3/NFS Version 3' is also good to have.
These 5 CD's can be bought separately or you can get a complete install
set that will contain these as well as the overlay, application,
demonstration and freeware. BTW the (for free from sgi) downloadable
6.5.22 contains only the overlay, none of the other stuff.

2 problems with finding it on ebay;
1) there's not many 'full' sets on ebay anymore
2) They are a bit expensive compared to the cost of the machine(s)
themselves.

Running linux or *bsd on these seems a shame, not to mention some of the
features aren't supported on many machines.

Thanks for the tip though. :)

Thanks

Hi

There seems to be more sold from Europe (Germany and UK) and some of the
sellers are shops with buy-it-now so you might expand your search. For
example this shop: http://stores.ebay.com/EU-Powerseller-GbR-Shop they
also take paypal...

But of course it costs a bit and in my case, infinetly more that the
machines because the machines were for free. I have an Indigo2 and an Indy.

I have also bought just an overlays from an ebay seller.
It's a shame for me for not researching more!
Now I am in the same position of scrapping around trying to get Foundation and Developer CDs.
Please help!

On a related note, I have a 2100 I'm trying to get irix for. The store
mentioned is currently selling 6.5.1. I'm told that wont work well on a
2100, so the question is: are the overlays including all previous ones?
(i.e. can I just get the 6.5.22 maintenence release and viola!, full
6.5.22?)

Well, the standard configuration for a sgi 2100 are the ***@350 nodes.
But support for the r12k cpus comes first with the 6.5.3 release.

So all whats needed is a more recent Overlay CD set and a 6.5 "Software
library" which offer the foundation 1+2,nfs, and some others. Than you
have to boot from the first Overlay CD and not from the "Installation
Tools".

Joerg

Handy info there, thanks. I havent actually booted it with a terminal
connected yet, so that gives me an idea what to expect.

Overlay CDs are bootable? Eugh, between getting ripped-off on ebay, the
complexity of this all, and my itching desire to get this thing off the
ground, I'm at the end of my tether. Does anyone want to just sell me
'whats needed' cheaply?

A sgi guru friend told me that, according to the EULA, since I own the
hardware, its legal to just copy irix. nekochan people seem to think
otherwise, so I don't know what the real deal is.

It seems rather braindamaged considering Sun Microsystems' support for
their hardware, the fact that sgi no longer sell mips systems, and that
they went bankrupt not long ago.

In any case, given my current frustration, I'm somewhat accomodating of
just copying it too.
